Research into living roof benefits, legislation and key nature-based solution strategies for Tāmaki Makaurau.
Auckland Central Library Living Roof Monitoring
The Urbanist is working with Auckland Council Healthy Waters on the Auckland Central City Library living roof, to set up monitoring of the benefits that this living roof provides and raise awareness of the environmental, economic, social, and cultural benefits of living infrastructure.
Importantly, nature-based solutions, such as living roofs, can have a significant impact on hydrological regulation and can help cities adapt to climate change, increasing resilience to storm events and reduce flooding.
A comparison study is proposed at the University of Auckland that will utilise a replica of the installed living roof and compare it to other options, with the monitoring program taking place over the next five years.
The project considers overseas examples where high uptake of living roofs has been achieved and discusses the legislative differences between those cities and Tāmaki Makaurau.
